Yearly Green School Updates
- Description: During the full staff meeting held during one of the beginning of year professional days for teachers, a discussion of our school's environmental goals is always held. Staff are first reminded of our environmental education goals as a Green School. They are reminded of the school-wide activities, such as recycling. Although the environmental literacy requirements for the high school level are handled mainly by the science teachers in our building, all teachers are encouraged to support the environmental literacy requirements in lessons, attitudes and actions. Staff is then given time to ask questions and share ideas pertaining to the support of our school's environmental goals and meeting the environmental literacy requirements.

Blue Moon Rising Presentation
- Description: Blue Moon Rising is a community partner with NGHS. One of our science teachers sits on its Board of Directors. They offer assistance in developing environmental lesson plans for any subject area and offer tours of the facility and field trips for students. The staff assisted with the Cove Run Restoration Project Celebration. On March 24, 2014, the Operations Manager at Blue Moon Rising held a professional development session for NGHS teachers. He first explained the facility and all of the renewable and sustainable resources utilized there. He next discussed the educational opportunities that the facilities offered to local schools. The session ended with teachers brainstorming and suggesting other uses of the facility and potential lessons that could be conducted there.

STAR Workshop
- Description: Two NHS science teachers have been involved in the STAR program, which has included several days of professional development. With funding from NOAA-BWET program, the Student, Teacher and Researcher (STAR) Nitrate Investigation seeks to engage Garrett, Allegany and Washington County teachers and students in a local scientific investigation in collaboration with University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Appalachian Laboratory (UMCES-AL) scientists. Together this team investigates nitrate pollution. With guidance from scientists and teachers, students work in small groups to collect precipitation and runoff samples at three sites and answer one of five research questions. They then discuss their findings with the scientists to understand the role of western Maryland schools in nitrate pollution. The professional development helps teachers understand the concepts covered in the investigation and effectively mentor students through the investigation. The investigation and corresponding activities are aligned with Next Generation Science Standards and developed using the Understanding by Design curriculum framework.

Aquaculture in Action Training
- Description: Aquaculture in Action is a program sponsored by Maryland Sea Grant. Participating high school teachers attend a summer workshop to learn how to construct an aquaculture system, monitor water quality, care for fish, and use the system for STEM education in the high school classroom. Environmental science teacher Rebecca Kenyon-Sisler has attended this workshop for two summers and currently has an aquaculture and hydroponics system that is used for classroom investigations. The native fish that are raised in the systems are released into local waterways each spring.
