Riparian Buffer Creation & Maintenance
The creation of the riparian buffer zones along Cove Run required the collaboration and support of various local groups and individuals, some of whom are listed on the sign posted at each site (see below). The community benefits from the creation of the riparian buffer zones in pastureland, and the students are able to learn while completing an action project. We continue to be assisted by the MD DNR fisheries staff to monitor stream health and biodiversity.

Garden Club Tour
The native meadow on our campus was a feature in the Mountain Laurel Garden Club's 2017 "Secret Country Gardens" Tour. The garden tour is an annual fundraiser for the garden club. Because the Mountain Laurel Garden Club assists NGHS in various activities, we were happy to have the opportunity to assist them in this important fundraiser while sharing our native meadow with the community.

Garrett College
Every year, NGHS students visit a saw-whet owl banding station run by a Garrett College professor and students. Our students learn about the owls as well as general information about wildlife tagging and monitoring.

Mountain Laurel Garden Club
The Mountain Laurel Garden Club has been extremely involved in assisting NGHS with many of our student-centered environmental activities. They have assisted in the creation of the native meadow and the replacement of the flowerbed under our nature trail sign. They also help students identify plants in the Biology II biodiversity study.

Walmart
This year, NGHS received a $1,000.00 grant from a local Walmart to help fund our wetland restoration project. The money will go toward a walkway and viewing platform being constructed to make the wetland more accessible for lessons.
